Winter Reading Olympics

Go for GOLD and enjoy great books over our February break. Log the minutes you spend reading over the vacation break and bring this form to your classroom teacher when you return to school on February 28th.  Your log should have gone home with you, if you lost it, no worries! You can get a new copy below. (Reading independently, reading to a family member, or being read to or by a family member all can be counted in your reading log.) READING IS SNOW MUCH FUN!

Olympians train hard and have great stamina, and so do our readers. 

Write down the number of minutes you read each day, and don’t forget to have a parent sign your log!

Author Maryann Cocca-Leffler Visits Longfellow Elementary in February

Longfellow students and staff had the opportunity to have author visits at each grade level K-5 with Maryann Cocca-Leffler. Maryann lives in Portland and has written and illustrated over 70 children’s books. Many of her stores are inspired by people and events in her own life.

In grades K and , students were introduced to the Power of Yet, a growth mindset picture book. Grade 2 and 3 were introduced to Janine, a picture book that features Maryann’s daughter who has a disability and teaches readers several lessons:

Love  who  you  are!

Stand  up  for  yourself.

Stand  up  for  others.

Not  everyone  is  going  to  be  your friend. 

              (And  that’s  okay)

In grades 4 and 5, Maryann Cocca-Leffler shared her newest book We Want to Go to School. This is a narrative nonfiction book that she co-wrote with her daughter Janine Leffler. The book introduces readers young and old to the landmark case Mills vs. Board of Education in 1972. This case led to laws that ensure children with disabilities receive a free public education. Readers learn about the facts and the people that helped to create public schools as being more inclusive. 

Funding for the author visit was provided by the Longfellow PTO.
